Connection OptionDescriptionConsiderations
Connect Using The Odata QueriesPower BI can execute OData queries, which are powerful tools for filtering and aggregating data before returning it to Power BI.This method requires writing OData queries which is similar to SQL. Sample reports are provided to help you get started, except for simpler reports on Boards data.
Connect Using The Azure Devops Data ConnectorThe Azure DevOps Data connector requires enabling the Analytics views feature. Please note that this particular connector is designed to work solely with Boards data, also known as work items. It does not support other data types, such as Pipelines. This connector provides a flat-list of work items and does not support work item hierarchies. We want to inform you that currently, there are no plans to update the connector to support other types of data. Thus, we would recommend using OData queries unless your report is simpler and involves only Boards data.
Connect Using The Power Bi’s Odata Feed ConnectorPower BI offers an OData Feed connector which enables you to connect to and explore the Analytic’s OData endpoint. This is the most common method for Power BI to interact with OData feeds. You can easily browse and select the entities you need, and use the Query Editor to filter the dataset as per your requirements..If you have a small Power BI account, you can use this method. However, it is important to note that this method does not support server-side query folding. All filters are applied client-side, which means that all data is pulled into Power BI before applying the filters. This approach may work fine for small accounts, but for larger accounts, it could result in long refresh times and timeouts.
Downloading PBIT Files Directly From Azure DevopsThis will allow you to use the Power BI report directly from Azure DevOps queries. PBIT files can also be downloaded from Azure DevOps.This is useful when creating specific queries in Azure DevOps for simpler reporting.
