Equity-based motivation

Equity-based motivation:
People, in general, have a sense of justice that affects our self-esteem. It is in our nature to seek to maintain the equity between the contributions that we bring to our work and the outcome that we perceive from other's efforts.
In this video "Monkey Equity ", we can observe how one of the monkeys understood that it made an effort and was rewarded. Then he observes how another monkey made the same effort, but instead, it receives what the monkey thought it was a "better reward". Clearly, it got upset and expected to be given the same reward, and when it didn't, it appeared to be upset because of it. That is precisely what Equity Theory declares.
Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory is based on human needs. This theory classifies all human needs into a hierarchical manner from lower to higher order. In this theory, we can clearly see that when a man has completed a level of a need, it will no longer serve to motivate a man.
One of the needs is to meet is the psychological one. That will include everything that we perceive we need to maintain our existence. In this case, it is evident that the reward is food.
Also, the esteem need is affected. The situation has a negative effect on self-esteem and self-respect. When the monkey did not get what it thought it would be fair to receive as a reward, the monkey was getting upset. There has been a point in our life that we have felt the same. This esteem needs, won't get full fill because the person understands that won't have the strength and capability of being useful.
Howard Schultz, has one of the largest and most successful coffee companies in the world and has created more than 300,000 jobs. I have never thought how someone, not only sells 6 dollars coffee, but have made a trend all over the world. His secret? How he motivates his employees. One of his significant quotes: "Our mission statement about treating people with respect and dignity is not just words but a creed we live by every day. You can't expect your employees to exceed the expectations of your customers if you don't exceed the employees' expectations of management. That's the contract. "
